July 2014 Virginia Tech Housing Report

July was "grudgingly positive" for housing; June's abnormalities were revised and most sectors improved. The exceptions were new and existing house sales - new house sales decreased month-over-month and existing sales have decreased year-over-year for the past few months.

While several housing sectors have improved -the majority are a long way from being considered as normal. Once again, there are many headwinds that may deter a full recovery. Why?

USG Releases Private Label Floor Prep Products Under Powerhold Brand

Derr Flooring rejoins Pinnacle's distribution network Carrollton, Texas - Pinnacle Interior Elements Ltd., a global hardwood flooring manufacturer, announced that Derr Flooring Co. has rejoined its family of national distributors.

 As part of Pinnacle's distribution family, Derr will showcase Pinnacle's Portofino and Hearthstone Classics product lines-both available to Derr's customers throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the New York metropolitan area, including Long Island.

Haines Announces Grand Opening of Wheeler Supplies Center

NAFCD member Haines & Company, Inc. announced the grand opening of the Wheeler Supplies Center in Orlando, Florida on August 22, 2014. 

 

This is Haines' first Supplies Center opening and the beginning of Haines - Flooring Supplies Division expansion into the Florida market. Haines began the new supplies division when it ac quired Allied Products in early 2013 and then grew the division when it acquired CMH Space and Ellis Flooring in early 2014. Haines now operates twenty six Supplies Centers throughout the Mid Atlantic and Southeast. 

 

The Wheeler Supplies business has employed a very knowledgeable team of four, led by Jed Collins, Sales Manager Flooring Supplies, to start the Florida expansion. Jed has been a sales leader at Wheeler since the acquisition of Wheeler by Haines in 2007. The Wheeler Supplies Center is stocked with a broad array of flooring installation tools and supplies to meet the expectations of flooring contractors and flooring dealers. In addition, the current flooring supplies available to Wheeler floor covering dealers will be expanded and sold by the existing team of Wheeler Account Executives.

NAFCD member, E.J. Welch Company Hosts NWFA Intermediate Install School

The National Hardwood Flooring Association held an Intermediate Installation school at host E.J. Welch Company's Chicago location, Aug. 5-8. The school's instructors, who led the students through sessions on job-site preparation, installation of borders and medallions and parquet installation, were NWFA Regional Instructor Kjell Nymark, Precision Hardwood; Gene Jarka, Powernail Company; Mike Kearns, Primatech; Darek Zukowski, Chicagoland Flooring; and Roger Barker and Tim Moore, Fortifiber.

In addition, the report provides direct comparisons between your firm and other industry firms in the floor covering distribution business; however this valuable information is only available to firms that participate in the study.

June 2014 Virginia Tech Housing Report

The housing industry is improving, but the pace is agonizingly slow. In the latest Virginia Tech Housing Report, Urs Buehlmann and Al Schuler analyze statistics from across the industry and conclude that the housing industry has turned the corner, but growth is painfully slow.

Key reason why the housing and economic recovery remains muted:

  • Housing remains a difficult reach for many young people - jobs, credit, school debt, are problems.
  • Today's market is 30% or more cash sales, including many foreign buyers.
  • The economy is having some difficulty dealing with demographic issues (aging population), debt and credit issues.

2014 NAFCD Employee Compensation Report

Learn how your firm's employee compensation package compares to the rest of the industry with the 2014 NAFCD Employee Compensation Report conducted by Profit Planning Group. This study analyzes 2013 compensation data of 978 U.S. firms in more than 6,000 locations. The results provides information about both executive and employee compensation including salaries, bonuses, commissions and perks. It also includes details about fringe benefits such as health insurance, retirement programs and employee time-off. Firms were categorized into over 20 sales volumes and over 100 geographic areas.

Access the Q2 Distributor and Manufacturer NAFCD Quarterly Executive Trends Index

The Q2 2014 NAFCD Quarterly Executive Trends Index is now available.

The NAFCD + NBMDA Distributor Executive Trends Index shows three key points:

1.    Slightly better sales growth versus Q1
2.    Slightly reduced 2014 sales growth outlooks
3.    Continued solid profit gain forecasts for 2014

The results of the survey show that 2014 looks to be on pace for another year of sales and profit recovery for both building materials and floor covering distributors, even though not likely to the same level of progress in 2013. Login to the website to view the full Q1 distributor report.
 
The NAFCD + NBMDA Manufacturer Executive Trends Index shows that respondents are gaining increased confidence in underlying demand trends with more than 50 percent of manufacturers adding headcount in the near-term and nearly 80 percent expected to add distributors over the next 12 months. Manufacturers experienced stronger sales growth in April, May and June relative to the weather impact in Q1.

Two accomplished E.J. Welch Co. associates were promoted to full time  management positions.
