2014 NAFCD Profit Analysis Report (PAR) Survey

Participate in the 2014 Profit Analysis Survey
In our continuing efforts to deliver the value our members expect from their industry organization, NAFCD is pleased to continue the Profit Analysis Report (PAR). Results presented in this report are based on income statement, balance sheet and operating data supplied by NAFCD firms. 

The information in the report provides answers to questions such as "Are the most successful firms in a down market placing more emphasis on gross margin management or expense control?" In addition, the report provides direct comparisons between your firm and other industry firms in the floor covering distribution business, however this valuable information is only available to firms that participate in the study.

Participation
To participate in the 2014 Profit Analysis Report study and receive the final report at no cost, visit the NAFCD website and download a PDF of the survey. All surveys must be submitted by August 15, 2014.

2014 NAFCD Employee Compensation Report

2014 NAFCD Employee Compensation Report Now Available
Learn how your firm's employee compensation package compares to the rest of the industry with the 2014 NAFCD Employee Compensation Report conducted by Profit Planning Group. This study analyzes 2013 compensation data of 978 U.S. firms in more than 6,000 locations.
 
The value of this report to your organization is threefold:
  1. The results help you determine where your compensation plan stands, not only within the industry, but also compared to other companies in distribution.
  2. The data helps NAFCD protect your interests by responding to legislative proposals regarding government-mandated health and leave benefits for employees.
  3. The information helps companies that must prove their compensation is "reasonable" within the constraints of the Internal Revenue Code.
The results are presented in two documents. Combined, they provide information about compensation and benefit practices for distribution industries.
 
NAFCD Detailed Report
This report provides information about both executive and employee compensation including salaries, bonuses, commissions and perks. It also includes details about fringe benefits such as health insurance, retirement programs, and employee time off.
 
Industry Report
The industry report presents the analysis of all participating firms. Firms were categorized into over 20 sales volumes and over 100 geographic areas.  
 
How Do I Access the 2014 Employee Compensation Report?
NAFCD members who participated in the survey have already received the results at no cost. NAFCD non-participating members and non-members may purchase the report ($495 member / $995 non-member).

April 2014 Housing Report

Potential Negative Macro-factors Preventing a Robust Housing Market Recovery
Several of the housing market indicators exhibited marginal increases in April which is not typical for spring. Historically, March, April and May are the best months for housing starts and sales (new and existing). It appears that the overall market is muddling along.
 
As in previous months, the near - term outlook on the U.S. housing market remains unchanged - there are potentially several negative macro - factors or headwinds at this point in time for a robust housing recovery (based on historical long - term averages). Each month you can access specific data on new housing starts, existing home sales and construction spending, and feature analysis on overall impact to the economy and your business. NAFCD Quarterly Executive Trends Index Highlights


Distributors
The Q1 NAFCD Quarterly Executive Trends Index showed that 2014 looks to be another year of recovery for distributors with the arrival of warmer spring weather. Weather has been the largest driver to the slower sales growth for distributors with 36 percent who experienced a 5 point or larger negative sales growth impact in January due to weather. Other key points include a strong 2014 sales growth outlook and continued profit progress. 2014 full year growth is forecast up 8 percent versus 2013 up 10 percent as NAFCD distributors expect less upside in 2014; up 9 percent versus 2013 up 13 percent.

Manufacturers According to the nearly 40 manufacturers that responded to the index survey, they expect another year of strong sales and profit growth in 2014. Despite the negative weather impact on first quarter sales growth, 2014 sales are currently forecast to increase 11 percent. Twenty-three percent of manufacturers have increased full year 2014 forecasts over the last 90 days. In addition to strong sales forecasts, 50 percent of NAFCD and NBMDA manufacturers anticipate an increase in headcount over the next 90 days and nearly 80 percent plan to add distributors during 2014, highlighting manufacturer expectations for a continued recovery in 2014.

Distributors' Perspective: The importance of keeping it simple

Powell believes that there is a sweet spot for good decision making that requires you to get enough information to make a good decision, but not too much so you don't run the risk of analysis paralysis and delay making the decision, or don't make the decision at all (which is still a decision, just not a good one). If you wait until you are 100% sure, it is almost always too late to capitalize on that opportunity being offered to you or to avoid the problem you are dealing with. Putting off making a decision in order to procure more and more information tends to confuse the issue at hand and makes the decision process more difficult than it already was.

As distributors, we are frequently-sometimes daily-sent offers from new suppliers to carry their product lines. Without a good decision-making process, we could potentially pass up a great opportunity or make very bad decisions to take on product lines that aren't a good fit for our companies. With so many data points coming at us via the Internet, trade publications, news outlets, business partners, customers, etc., it's tough to keep it simple and stay true to an effective decision-making process.

2014 NWFA Wood Flooring Expo Highlights

At the 2014 Expo, NAFCD was a featured exhibitor on the show floor allowing NAFCD staff and volunteer leaders the opportunity to connect with many current and potential members. For the first time, NAFCD and NWFA co-sponsored the First Annual Distributor & Manufacturer Reception on Thursday, April 17th which served to unite the flooring industry's leading wood flooring distributors and manufacturer partners. Over two hundred, distributors and manufacturers took advantage of this opportunity to connect within a casual environment immediately following the close of the NWFA Wood Flooring Expo.

Prior to the start of the 2014 NWFA Wood Flooring Expo, NAFCD staff and volunteer leaders participated in a meeting of the leading trade associations serving the flooring industry designed to identify areas of synergy and opportunities for collaboration to address pressing industry issues. Tentatively called the Floor Covering Leadership Council, the organization held a productive first meeting where a mission statement was developed and some initial areas for possible collaboration where identified.

NAFCD will once again partner with NWFA in 2015 when the Wood Flooring Expo moves to St. Louis on April 28-May 1st. NAFCD and the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) will continue to deepen their strategic alliance by collaborating on activities focused on wholesale distributors within the flooring supply chain.
